Understanding Medicare

Four parts.
One clear picture.

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older, and some younger people with disabilities. It has different parts that cover different types of healthcare services — here's the map.

Part A

Hospital

Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing, and hospice care.

Part B

Medical

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and medical equipment.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

The all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare.

Part D

Prescription

Prescription drug coverage for the medications you take.

The big decision

Medicare Advantage vs.
Medicare Supplement

Both paths can work beautifully — for the right person. The difference comes down to networks, premiums, and how you like to use your coverage.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

  • Replaces Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
  • Often includes prescription drug coverage
  • May include dental, vision & hearing aids
  • Typically lower monthly premiums
  • Provider networks and prior authorizations
Medigap

Medicare Supplement

  • Works alongside Original Medicare
  • Helps pay Medicare deductibles & coinsurance
  • No provider networks — see any Medicare doctor
  • Guaranteed renewable
  • Separate Part D needed for prescriptions

Not sure which path fits your doctors, medications, and budget? That's exactly what a free Medicare review is for — we compare all available plans, side by side, with no obligation to purchase. Want the fundamentals first? Start with our Medicare education guide.

Common Medicare questions

Quick, plain-English answers — and when you want the deep dive, our Medicare education center is free.

What is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. It bundles your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage, usually includes Part D prescription drugs, and often adds extras Original Medicare doesn't cover — like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits — frequently for a low or $0 monthly premium.
How is Medicare Advantage different from Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan?
Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare and bundles most coverage into one plan with low premiums and a yearly out-of-pocket maximum — but it uses provider networks and may require referrals or prior authorization. Original Medicare paired with a Medigap plan lets you see any provider who accepts Medicare nationwide with no networks, but costs more in premiums and needs a separate Part D drug plan.
What should I compare when choosing a Medicare Advantage plan?
Confirm your doctors and hospitals are in-network, check that your prescriptions are on the plan's formulary, compare the annual maximum out-of-pocket limit, and weigh the extra benefits (dental, vision, hearing) against what you'll actually use. A licensed agent can run your specific doctors and medications against every available plan for free.
When can I enroll in or switch a Medicare Advantage plan?
You can first enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday. After that, the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7) lets you join or switch plans for the next year, and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1–March 31) lets current Advantage members switch once.
